It's not controversial to declare that watermelon is a perfect dessert for any kind of summer party--its cold, sweet, thirst-quenching qualities are just the thing in hot weather. But the juicy and refreshing melon is capable of so much more. With just a few new knife skills, you can transform the fruit into an amazing drink dispenser or a spirit-infused treat. Here are five creative ways to maximize your watermelon enjoyment this summer.
1. Make a watermelon keg. Create a base by cutting off the tip of one end of the watermelon so it can stand upright. Slice off a larger portion of the opposite side of the watermelon. Scoop out the flesh, reserving for cocktails. Using a knife or apple corer, create a small hole in the melon and insert a metal spigot. Fill with watermelon punch, like this boozy watermelon lemonade.

2. Make watermelon "shots." Place a towel around the base of the watermelon to keep it from rolling. Use a knife to cut a hole that's the size of the neck of the bottle of vodka you've selected. Using a spoon, scoop out some of the flesh. Then, insert the vodka bottle upside down into the opening you've created. The vodka will be absorbed by the fruit in four to 12 hours depending upon the size of your watermelon. Then slice and serve (but definitely don't make it into a salad, below).

3. Cube up watermelon for an instant salad. Slice watermelon into quarters. Cut along the edge of the melon between the red flesh and white rind. Make crosswise slices that are about one inch apart. Then, make lengthwise slices that are about one inch apart. Add creamy, salty feta, freshly torn mint, a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, and freshly cracked black pepper to make a simple savory and sweet side salad.

4. Freeze watermelon ice cubes. Cube watermelon, place on a ceramic plate or baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap, then place in the freezer for two hours. The pink cubes add great flavor to cocktails, won't make your drink watery as they melt, and the best part is you can eat them once you've finished your drink.

5. Cut watermelon "so you don t mess up your face." The Crazy Russian Hacker is at it again, this time with an ingenious tip for watermelon. Slice watermelon into points. Then, slice off a bit of the rind from each slice. This simple trick will keep your face clean while eating watermelon.
